The might of Rome is evident in Turkey
Ephesus
- city living at its finest: stroll to a library, stadium, shopping street

Istanbul

The two photos with Van were taken quite close to each other on the Golden Horn, Istanbul's old harbor. We never did figure out why an encampment with camels and goats was in the center of a city of 17 million - it seemed like an old caravan. On the bridge scene, my head is between the Sultan's palace and harem (on the left) and the most amazing building of antiquity on the right - the Hagia Sophia church built in 537AD - the photo below:
The sheer size of this old Roman/ Byzantine church still impresses today. Europe's great cathedrals and Renaissance life in Florence were not a dramatic improvement over the above photos. It seems that the quality of life in ancient Ephesus and Istanbul set a standard that was not exceeded until the 20th century.
